Lang Architecture’s Selected Projects

History of Lang Architecture

Lang Architecture, founded in 2003 by Drew Lang, is a New York-based firm specializing in architecture, strategy, and development. The firm emphasizes «connected design,» aiming to holistically unite place, purpose, and experience to enhance daily life.

One of the firm’s notable projects is Hudson Woods, a development of twenty-six sustainably designed homes in New York’s Catskills region. This project reflects Lang Architecture’s commitment to integrating design with the natural environment, utilizing local materials and craftsmanship to create environmentally friendly developments that are also economically successful.

In addition to residential projects, Lang Architecture has undertaken various commercial and public spaces, including the renovation of Minis Shabu Shabu restaurant in Flushing, Queens, and the Parc Hotel near LaGuardia Airport. The firm has also initiated Brick & Wonder, a curated community of real estate and design professionals, fostering collaboration and enhancing project outcomes.

Through its interdisciplinary approach, Lang Architecture strives to create meaningful experiences that connect place, purpose, and experience, elevating the quality of daily life for its clients and the communities it serves

Company Culture at Lang Architecture

Lang Architecture fosters a collaborative and inclusive work culture that emphasizes respect, open dialogue, and the unique contributions of each team member. The firm values the distinct histories and experiences of its staff, creating an environment where diverse perspectives are encouraged and appreciated.

We are an interdisciplinary team of problem-solvers bringing a cultural lens to innovative designs.

The firm also emphasizes the importance of listening—to clients, the environment, and each other—to inform designs that are responsive and meaningful. This practice of attentive listening ensures that the unique needs and desires of clients are thoughtfully integrated into each project.

Lang Architecture’s commitment to collaboration and community building led to the creation of Brick & Wonder, a membership collective that brings together professionals from various fields within the real estate and design industries. This platform facilitates knowledge sharing and fosters innovative partnerships, reflecting the firm’s belief that collaboration generates more long-term value than working in isolation.

Lang Architecture’s Selected Projects

Hudson Woods – Kerhonkson, New York

Hudson Woods is a community of 26 homes spread across 131 forested acres in the Catskills of upstate New York. The homes and additional structures blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, with each lot featuring built elements tailored to specific site conditions. The buildings appear modest from the outside but reveal spacious interiors upon entry.

Large windows and walls of glass connect the indoor spaces with the stunning outdoor scenery of mountains and forests. The buildings are constructed from natural materials, including locally sourced woods and stone, and are crafted by local labor. Roads and driveways are made from crushed bluestone mined on the property, and forests are cleared selectively to minimize impact. The design prioritizes preserving the landscape over the ease of construction, ensuring a primary experience of nature.

Kenoza Lake House – Kenoza Lake, New York

The Kenoza Lake House is a single-story, three-bedroom stone residence nestled in a mature woodland with expansive lake views. Visitors approaching from the road wind their way downhill through 15 forested acres, glimpsing the lake through the trees.

The house is divided into three sections: a central living area, the primary suite, and a guest wing on either side. The sunken living room in the central area creates an intimate feel in a spacious, window-filled room that connects to nature. A 40-foot array of accordion doors lines one side of the living space, offering a seamless blend with the outdoors.

The shed roofs are angled to match the natural terrain, and the house is clad in local fieldstone, anchoring it to its site. The copper roofs will age and blend with the surrounding vegetation over time.

Black Houses at Hudson Woods – Kerhonkson, New York

The black houses at Hudson Woods feature greenhouses, screen porches with outdoor kitchens, pool houses, pools, studios, garages, and more. All of these elements are seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape, carefully designed to respond to specific site conditions.

Natural materials like local woods and stone are used, and the structures are hand-crafted by local labor. The design prioritizes preserving the landscape over the ease of construction, ensuring a primary experience of nature is maintained.
