Grimshaw‘s Selected Projects

385 Bourke Street – Melbourne, Australia

The concept design by Grimshaw for 385 Bourke Street looks into the possibility of building offices above the Galleria Retail Center’s existing roof and podium. Additionally, it aims to renovate the current retail center, which spans a two-level podium and is roughly 7000 square meters.

The project’s goal is to improve the corner site’s public space and connect it to the nearby streets and alleyways, all the while interacting at a low level with the existing 385 Bourke Street tower. One of the objectives of the new structure is to house Grade «A» offices with a minimum net lettable area of 24,000 square meters. The design aims to minimize the new building’s impact on the existing retail tenancies and services for the main tower at the basement and high levels.

Kutubu Convention Centre – Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Kutubu Convention Centre is part of Star Mountain Plaza, an integrated mixed-use precinct that includes two hotels, offices, retail space, eateries and bars, and a multipurpose cultural facility. It is situated on a sloping former quarry site in Port Moresby. The 5,500 square meter convention center is divided into four levels and has an 800-seat banquet hall, 1,000 square meters of flexible outdoor function spaces that can be used for a variety of purposes, and flexible meeting spaces that open to the grand central foyer that is naturally ventilated.

The distinctive roof, which draws inspiration from the traditional timber long houses that serve as the hub of the nation’s rural villages, is a distinctive feature of the building’s highly functional yet iconic design. It is 30 meters wide, 100 meters long, and rises more than 16 meters above the ground, and shades outdoor gathering spaces below from the sun and precipitation. The project’s interior concept responds in kind, providing a modern interpretation of the Papuan long house form. The materials, hues, and patterns honor the cowrie shell, which has long been used as a unit of account in Papua New Guinea, the natural surroundings of the area, and the customs of the native craftspeople.

Kutubu is more than just a legacy project; it was created to satisfy the demands of the 2018 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference, which it successfully hosted. The convention center is a national landmark and cultural icon that will promote integration with the surrounding business district and community.

University of New South Wales Hilmer Building – Sydney, Australia

Grimshaw created a new research laboratory facility for the University of New South Wales Australia’s School of Materials Science and Engineering and School of Chemical Engineering. For researchers, academics, and faculty members, the scheme offers seamless connections between physical and chemical science laboratories and workspaces. Write-up areas, offices, and conference rooms form the framework of a modular and reconfigurable laboratory system that connects vertically and fosters teamwork.

A high-performance façade defines the building’s appearance with full-height glazing and honed off-white cast GRC louvres that are angled in response to solar orientation. Also, the plan includes a sunlit, deep colonnade along the southern boundary of the new Alumni Green. Located on the colonnade, the University hosts the Michael Crouch Innovation Centre (MCIC), which serves as a platform for showcasing innovative ideas and providing experiential learning programs.
