Macarena Chaves Martinez has been able to apply the experiences she had at the Illinois Institute of Technology and Forma Architecture to design a space for Start-ups and those that form them. Macarena sought to combine the office space needs and the residential needs into one space, a neighborhood for those entrepreneurs in Madrid.

Macarena Chaves Martinez joined the Architect-USJob+J1 Visa Program more recently and has been working towards getting an opportunity to work in the USA again. For the Portfolio Challenge, she submitted StartMadA project that she worked on while in Madrid, which seeks to provide designs for a northern section of the city known for its financial district and tall towers. This area of Madrid has many start-up companies that require a different style of office space that promotes more interconnection and communication.

StartMad seeks to fuse the two main needs in this area of Madrid, office space and residential buildings. Thus, the project is designed as a neighborhood that infuses these two needs, and the atrium and the social connectors allow for people to find each other in different settings for different needs.
