MESH architectures’ Selected Projects

History of MESH architectures

MESH Architectures was founded in 1997 by Eric Liftin with a vision of redefining how we experience space, both physically and virtually. At a time when the digital age was just beginning to reshape daily life, MESH broke new ground by treating websites as habitable spaces, applying architectural thinking to the virtual world. This willingness to experiment with new mediums laid the foundation for a practice that thrives on pushing boundaries and questioning conventions.

As the studio grew, its focus shifted toward the dense and historically rich environment of New York City. Instead of approaching architecture as a process of erasure and replacement, MESH developed a reputation for adaptive transformation – revitalizing old buildings with contemporary materials, translucent surfaces, and inventive structural solutions. Their projects reflect a belief that the past and present should coexist, creating spaces that honor history while embracing modernity.

Today, MESH is recognized not only for its design innovation but also for its commitment to crafting luminous, livable environments. Their portfolio ranges from pioneering residential projects that rethink urban living to forward-looking commercial and cultural works. Through it all, the firm has remained true to its founding spirit: architecture as both a practical discipline and a medium for exploration.

Company Culture at MESH architectures

At MESH Architectures, collaboration, curiosity, and care define the studio culture. Every project begins with listening deeply to clients, understanding their needs, aspirations, and constraints before translating them into architecture. This client-first philosophy allows MESH to create designs that are not only aesthetically compelling but also functional, sustainable, and enriching for the people who use them.

The firm resists the idea of a “signature style.” Instead, it focuses on a process-driven approach, ensuring that each project emerges from the unique story of its site and its occupants. This makes MESH’s work feel personal and responsive, whether it’s reimagining an urban residence or designing a public space that serves a community.

Successful projects are always the result of a fruitful collaboration of the client’s desires and the architect’s ingenuity.

Internally, MESH fosters a culture of experimentation and dialogue, encouraging architects to explore new materials, forms, and technologies. It’s a studio where innovation is balanced with humility, and where every voice—client, collaborator, or team member—plays a part in shaping the final design.

MESH architectures Selected Projects

Timber House – Brooklyn, NY

Timber House is the first mass-timber condominium in the New York region: a six-story, 14-unit building constructed with glue-laminated timber structural elements. Its design emphasizes sustainability and high performance: passive-house-level insulation, energy recovery ventilation, induction cooking, heat pumps, solar panels, and EV charging are all integrated. Rooms are lofty with nearly 11-foot ceilings, featuring Danish brick exteriors, custom hexagonal floor tiles, LED lighting, and boutique finishes. Timber House has earned recognition such as World-Architects’ Building of the Week and an Architizer A+ Award for Sustainable Multi-Unit Residential Building.

Made in New York Media Center – Brooklyn, NY

This 20,000 sq ft media center, created for the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP), exemplifies MESH’s commitment to user-driven, imaginative spaces. Designed as a «village-like» workspace, it features communal zones, innovative meeting areas with egg-shaped tables, a café, classrooms, and a high-tech screening room that floats as an “island” in the main space, and is fully wrapped in continuous video projection. The project showcases MESH’s mastery of translating programmatic complexity into human-centered environments.

Atrium House – Williamsburg, Brooklyn

In transforming a former garage into a two-volume residence, MESH delivered a design that redefines urban residential typologies. The Atrium House features a serene inner courtyard (an invented outdoor space), with double-height living areas surrounded by folding glass walls – blending indoor and outdoor elements in a tight urban lot. The bold, modern intervention honors the industrial context while providing a tranquil retreat from city life.
