Giulia mentions that Arsenale Theatre is an existing theatre school and learning centre located within Milano’s urban pattern, hosted in a church of 1270. The aim of the project was to understand the meaning of Contemporary Theatre in order to conceive one starting from the existing perimeter of the building. According to Giulia:

Understanding the relationship between theatre and city was of fundamental importance to the design approach. From the architectural point of view the decision was to keep the identity of this building by maintaining the church’s typical facade but to fragment the existing inside structure into several elements.

Now each element of the theatre seems to push beyond it’s constraints in order to blend with the city and create a relationship that goes beyond physical limits. So every fragment of the designed theatre recalls a fragment of Milano because of common peculiar characteristics such as ways of being used, points of view, perception, form. The contemporary theatre imagined has so no limits and invades the city’s barriers: “the- atre sprawl”. So a second step was to map Milano in order to explicit all the spaces that the city could lend to the theatre. The city itself is Theatre. Arsenale Theatre is so the heart of a bigger system within the city that creates the Contemporary Theatre.

For this incredible rendering she used the following software: Autocad, Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop.
