Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) was founded in 1981 by Ricardo Scofidio and Elizabeth Diller. Charles Renfro joined in 1997 and became partner in 2004. Benjamin Gilmartin became a partner in 2015. Ric’s cross-genre work helped him get a spot on TIME’s «100 Most Influential People» list and he led the design of the High Line – the adaptive reuse of an obsolete, industrial rail infrastructure into a 1.5 mile-long public park, and contributed to the redesign of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, and The Broad in Los Angeles.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) focus on cultural and civic projects, DS+R’s work addresses the changing role of institutions and the future of cities. The studio is based in New York and is comprised of over 100 architects, designers, artists and researchers, led by four partners who have joined Ricardo over time—Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, Charles Renfro and Benjamin Gilmartin.
The MacArthur Foundation honored DS+R’s work with the ‘genius’ award, stating:
DS+R “have created an alternative form of architectural practice that unites design, performance, and electronic media with cultural and architectural theory and criticism. Their work explores how space functions in our culture and illustrates that architecture, when understood as the physical manifestation of social relationships, is everywhere, not just in buildings.”
Currently, the studio is designing a number of cultural projects around the world including the New Museum of Transport in Hungary, the Aboriginal Art and Cultures Center in Adelaide, and a new collection and research centre for the V&A in London (currently under construction).
DS+R joins Arquia | Architect-US Scholarship as a Destination Company
This collaboration between Architect-US and The Arquia Foundation scholarship creates a new opportunity to further connecting the European and American architectural worlds. These opportunities provide architects and designers from Spain or Portugal to challenge the parochial views in the US and is a celebration of the foundation’s 21st anniversary of the Scholarship program. The goal is to support the dissemination of cultural, social, professional, and educational projects.

Architect-US J1 Visa Participants
Felipe Sancho Cervera graduated from the Masters degree in Architecture ETSAB – Barcelona Architecture School about a year ago, and joined the Architect-US JOB + J1 Visa Program via the Arquia | Architect-US Scholarship. Felipe was chosen partially due to his work on Ceramics Innovation and Research Centre above a highway. He goes into detail on a possible redesign of how roads and infrastructure are made to be more sustainable and energy efficient. Felipe has been working at ESPINÀS I TARRASÓ, BARCELONA (SPAIN) since October 2019, but this year he will be joining Diller Scofidio+Renfro.
Esha Sikander joined the Architect-US JOB + J1 Visa Program and was able to get the opportunity to work in the USA with DS+R in their New York City office. Esha joined DS+R in March 2018 as an Intern, and was able to apply many of her new skills and experience from University to projects that she collaborated on with the team. Now they are back in the United Kingdom studying at the Architectural Association of Architecture School.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro Selected Projects
The David M. Rubenstein Forum will be based in the University of Chicago campus and will be a space of discourse and intellectual exchange aimed at fostering the outward engagement of visiting scholars, researchers and dignitaries from around the world. The building is made up of a two-story base and a slender, eight-story tower that includes a 185-seat auditorium and spaces for workshops, symposia and lectures. The tower is organized as a stack of neighborhoods with meeting and communal spaces offering diverse environments—formal and informal, calm and animated, focused and diffused, scheduled and spontaneous.

The Broad is a new contemporary art museum which was founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. It opened in September 2015 and the museum offers free general admission.
Dubbed “the veil and the vault,” the museum’s design merges the two key programs of the building: public exhibition space and the storage that supports The Broad Art Foundation’s extensive lending activities. Rather than relegate the storage to secondary status, “the vault” plays a key role in shaping the museum experience from entry to exit.
The Broad’s visitors reflected unprecedented diversity for an art museum, attracting a dramatically younger, more ethnically diverse audience than the national average – exceeding the client’s expectations. The Broad’s visitors reflect the diversity of Southern California and the dynamism of contemporary art.

15 Hudson Yards opened in 2019, it is the first residential building to open in Manhattan’s new Hudson Yards neighborhood. Designed with LEED Gold standards, and standing at 88-story, the 910-foot-tall tower is located at the southeast corner of Hudson Yards East at 30th Street and 11th Avenue.
“Over the past decade, we’ve had the opportunity to shape an urban ensemble comprised of a recreational, cultural and residential project for three diverse clients – working with the city on the High Line, with The Shed on a new cultural start-up, and now with Related on the first residential tower at Hudson Yards,” said DS+R Partner, Elizabeth Diller.
