Standard Architecture Selected Projects

Standard Architecture, a firm based in Los Angeles and lead by Jeffrey Allsbrook and Silvia Kuhle, join us for their first Featured Company Profile. They have selected three projects the provide us with a sense of the impact they seek to make through their design.

History of Standard Architecture and Company Culture

Standard is the Los Angeles based architecture and interior design partnership of architects Jeffrey Allsbrook and Silvia Kuhle. Their projects are guided by identity and culture, reflecting the narrative for which they’re designed.  Conscious of architecture’s potential to communicate, from a way of living to a company’s image, our work aspires to provide the setting that expresses the idea.

Their projects start with a dialogue about program and purpose, and progress toward their own identity.  At every scale, from furniture and interiors to architecture and urban planning, their architecture responds to fundamentals – space, light and materiality.  They design from the inside out, in response to a project’s specific conditions and constraints.  Views, light, proportion, orientation and materiality guide us to shape and organize volume.  Context and terrain; movement through space; and thresholds of variable permeability are consistent themes.

Collaboration and research across disciplines, and across time and culture, is essential to their work.  As the craft of building has become increasingly complex, participating in teams of diverse experts challenges us to find solutions that seamlessly integrate complexity.  This dialogue is supplemented by their own research.  They see history and the world as an illustrated guide to inventive design solutions that are ready for translation.  They find inspiration in everything from canonical architecture to indigenous dwellings and applied arts.

CO-OP CANYON

Co-op Canyon is a cooperative community of 1,000 people living together in terraced cliff dwellings overlooking lush urban canyon.  Residents gain equity in the co-op through participation in construction, agricultural, maintenance, education and conservation programs central to the sustenance of the community.

TREE HOUSE

Perched near the top of a hillside in Los Angeles, this house responds to its site and the city through its transparent southern exposure.  A large ash tree literally envelopes the house, creating a microclimate to which the project responds.  The house employs passive solar design and other low-tech methods of climate control even as the open south elevation allows panoramic views of the Los Angeles basin.

FOREST KNOLL

Inspired by Louis Kahn’s Kimbell Art Museum, the home takes the shape of three parallel gabled volumes with stairs between them. Each of these volumes houses different essential spaces and opens up onto an outdoor patio that overlooks the city, reinforcing the connection between home and landscape. The double-height middle volume, which houses an expansive living and dining space, was conceived by the architects as a singular great, big room. The pitch of its ceiling guides the eye toward the expansive glazing at the rear of the house, which opens up to the view over the city, at once providing shelter and inviting the outside in.
