6 things you should ask yourself before starting your applications

It’s time to begin your job hunt and it’s likely that you are not entirely sure where to start. There are a million things in your head and with the excessive amount of information and perhaps advice that is being dropped on you, you are getting more confused as apposed to more informed. That’s ok! It’s happened to most of us! What is important at this point is that you ask yourself a few questions to make sure that you start on the right path, and in this case it is good if you cover the vital questions to ensure constructive development throughout the process. So here we leave you with a list of questions which the Architect-US team believes will help you start this journey on the right track.

1. Why am I looking to leave my current employer?

It’s very important that you think about your professional development at this point. Most of our program participants already have had previous professional experience and they are looking to apply and strengthen their skill in a U.S. based company. You just have to make sure that it is something that you want as well. There are vast benefits that you can gain from practicing your profession in different country, you just have to think about doing it at the right time.

2. What do I enjoy most about my current role?

Make a pros and cons list of everything that you enjoy from your current role if it is applicable to you. Think about everything that you enjoy and excel at, and figure out if you’d like to continue the position for a while longer before making your move. As there’s the unfortunate truth that a lot of people are at jobs which they don’t enjoy their work or office environment, you should do everything that you can to find a job that best suits your ambitions. You’ve worked to get your degree, so pursue that which makes you happy!

3. What do I want from my career?

Think about that which you want to get the most out of your career. Which types of projects interest you most? What style architecture inspires your work? What skills do you wish to improve? What would you like to learn throughout your professional career? Establish certain goals which you’d like to achieve over the course of your profession.

4. What skills do you want to develop and what experiences do you want to gain in the next five years?

Think about the classes you’ve taken and the projects you’ve enjoyed during your academic degree. If you have experience in a professional setting, think about this as well. You want to think about where you want to be in the future and which opportunities you can allow yourself to do in the present. If you feel gaining experience  in a different country is something which you dream of, don’t waste time on other things, begin setting things in motion to realize your dreams, the longer you wait for opportunities the harder they may be to find in the future.

5. Are promotional opportunities and progression important to me in a new role?

If you are considering going to the U.S to gain professional experience for the duration of the J-1 Visa, that is great! You will be able to add that experience to your resume and apply those skills and insights which you’ve acquired to your future endeavors. You just have to make sure you focus your search on companies that can offer you the best chance to fulfill your potential. There is always the opportunity that a company asks you to stay for a longer period and even offer you a permanent position!

6. Where do I want to be, career-wise, in the next five years? What are the steps I need to make to get there?

I’m sure that you are an ambitious person, which is very important if you want progression in your career. So think about where you want to be in the next five years and the steps you need to take to get there. Plan ahead so that you get the experience or acquire the skills necessary to take you to that next level of where you want to be.
