FALLINGWATER ROAD TRIP

Visiting the Fallingwater House by Frank Lloyd Wright is totally a MUST. No matter where you are living I strongly believe this is a place everybody, especially architects need to visit at least once in their life. Having lived in Chicago, I had already visited many houses designed by Wright, but nothing compare to the Fallingwater.

So I rented a car with some friends to make our way to Pittsburgh. However the house is literally in the middle of nothing. We found it difficult to find a lodge where to stay the night before our tour. We were expecting to find a village close by or so but there are not that many and they were too pricy. Finally the best options was booking a room in one of those typical road inns about half an hour ago away from the house.

From New York City, the journey is supposed to be around 6 hours but just letting you know that it took as way longer to go and to come back in the end, about 8 hours. You will need to book your guided tour in advance, even if you are going in low season as we did it gets filled up pretty fast so try to plan ahead. There are 2 tour options, the short and cheap one and the long and expensive one. We obviously chose the expensive one since once having travel there we wanted to take as much advantage of it as we could and the price is totally worth it. Besides being allowed to spend within the house more time, this tour is more detailed and you are permitted to take pictures as well. Our guide was really patient and she was always willing to answer any question we had and to tell us anecdotes about every single thing: design, construction process, budget, the family, furniture…and so on.

I really enjoyed it and I found it really inspirational. You might have seen the Fallingwater many times in books and magazines but you cannot really understand its whole complexity until you visit it. One of the things about Wright that I still find fascinating is how he thought of every detail. Architects used to be like that, I know, but the way he did it was so consistent and creative that always blows my mind. I am sure it’ll be always beautiful but we visited it in autumn and the colors of nature played a really important role.

There is really nothing to see around the area but getting in «Deep America» is always a great experience, especially with friends. You got to see truly American life style every place you stop by and I love that.
