My Internship Experience at WORKac in New York!

I remember exactly the first time I came to America. I was 12, had just finished middle school, and was about to make the big jump into high school. I felt invincible. That was also the first time I saw New York, and I instantly knew it was my place. From that moment, I had it in my mind that one day, I’d be back.

Back then, I had no idea I’d end up as an architect—I wasn’t even thinking about college yet. But even though that dream of New York was always somewhere in my head, I never really had the chance to come back until I stumbled upon the J1 Visa Program internship opportunity at my university with Architect-US’s Summer Internship Program.

After five intense years of studying, I knew I needed a change. I needed to leave Spain and do something different, to chase this dream of mine. I just didn’t expect it would actually take me back to New York—and I couldn’t be happier about how it all turned out. This city has made me independent, confident, and honestly, really proud of myself.

I’ve had the chance to put everything I’ve learned into practice and even go beyond that. I’ve grown so much—not just professionally, but also personally. I’ve learned about myself, about relationships, and what it means to be far from home. Of course, leaving Spain was tough, and I miss my family a lot. But I know they’re proud of me. My mom always told me to chase my dreams all the way to the stars, because one day I’d touch the moon—and honestly, I think I did. I still have a lot to learn, and I’m excited to keep going.

My internship experience at WORKac has been amazing. I really have nothing to complain about. Even though it’s a small firm, I’ve gotten to work with lots of clients and make great friends. I’m starting to feel like a real professional, and I’m gaining more confidence every day. The vibe at the office is great—everyone is super helpful, and it honestly feels like a little family. And while I miss my real family, I’ve been lucky enough to build a new one here.

I live with three amazing roommates who’ve been there for me, shared laughs, listened, and supported me. I’ve been really lucky with them—they’re all American, so I’m learning a lot about the culture too. They’ve really helped make this experience so special and made me feel like I belong.

I totally recommend doing something like this. It doesn’t have to be right after you finish school, like I did—it can be at any point. I think sometimes we get stuck in our routines or in our country’s mindset and forget that there’s so much more out there to see, to learn, and to experience. Putting yourself in a new environment like this really opens your eyes—not just to the world, but to who you are. Plus, you meet people who might live far away, but will always be just one plane ride away.
