Bates Masi’s new Montauk beach house

Bates Masi + Architects has designed Navy Beach, a 185-square-meter home in Montauk, New York. Located on a hillside overlooking the water, the home rests on a brick foundation that helps mitigate noise from the nearby train tracks, integrating sensitively with the topography and coastal landscape.

The upper volume, clad in layers of cedar and supported by a timber partition system, creates a lightweight appearance that contrasts with the solidity of the base. Inside, fir cladding runs continuously across walls, ceilings and woodwork, maximizing views of the natural surroundings.
