Cetra Ruddy Selected Projects #3

History and Culture of CetraRuddy

CetraRuddy was founded by Principals John Cetra, FAIA and Nancy J. Ruddy, and led by a core group of distinguished principals, the firm works throughout the United States and abroad at varied scales and across typologies including multifamily housing, hospitality, education, cultural and commercial projects.
The 100-person firm’s thought leadership stems from a shared passion and spirit of creating, as well as the firm’s diversity of backgrounds and cultures. CetraRuddy’s core beliefs begin with the idea that Architecture Is Home, always seeking out the story behind each building site, their deep historical context, and fresh opportunities to craft innovative solutions and lead clients on their journeys toward building a new legacy.

CetraRuddy designed One Madison, a 50-story «sliver building» condominium tower on East 23rd Street at Madison Avenue, south of Madison Square Park. In 2014, the building received the Architizer A+ Jury Award for Residential High Rise, and since 2013, it has been part of the «Sky High & the Logic of Luxury» exhibition at the Skyscraper Museum in New York City.
The firm is also responsible for the adaptive reuse into residences of the Walker Tower, a former telephone switch building in Chelsea, Manhattan, and for the new Lincoln Square Synagogue building, which received an Honorable Mention for Religious Institution for Interior Design magazine’s Best of Year Awards. In 2018 they were featured in the New York Times for their new-construction apartment project ARO, on the site of the late Roseland Ballroom.
At CetraRuddy they find inspiration and trajectory in intellectually crafting unique and specific design solutions. Their practice creates communities, architecture and interior environments based on analytic research, excellence, and beauty.

Their practice creates communities, architecture, and interior environments based on problem solving, analytic research, context and scale.  The resulting solutions embody integrity and authenticity while adding poetry and inspiration to the urban fabric and human experience.  Their work is always about “home” – whether they design a residence, retail experience, hospitality space, or learning environment. They strive to elevate the building typologies they touch by combining their craft, attention to details, and integration of humanity and scale to compositions of articulated geometric forms. These designs are united with advanced building engineering, sustainable technologies, and are responsive to the challenges of efficient time-sensitive construction.

Fotografiska New York

Fotografiska New York is the US outpost of the internationally renowned destination for photography based in Stockholm. The adaptive reuse of the 1894 Landmark houses a museum crafted with the DNA of Fotografiska. The goal of the project was to create a space for New Yorkers to meet, eat, drink and experience photography through an immersive series of rotating exhibitions, while simultaneously returning the historic landmark to the public.

Hudson Greene Offices

Hudson Greene is a mixed-use Manhattan-style complex in Jersey City, New Jersey. The site is comprised of two towers: 77 Hudson Street and 70 Greene Street. Both buildings are connected by a 11-story, 374,000 SF parking structure topped with a 36,000 SF landscapped rooftop plaza with shared outdoor amenities, such as indoor/outdoor terraces, an interactive media gallery, communal café space as well as a wellness center. Sheathed in faceted, floor-to-ceiling glass walls of varying blues, the sleek towers have become an inocnic form along the Hudson River Skyline.

Cassa NY

This boutique hotel and luxury condominium is a powerful addition to the midtown Manhattan skyline. The transfer of adjacent property air rights allowed the construction of a slender 45-story tower on this mid-block site. The glistening silver-gray prefabricated metal facade is punctuated with windows arranged in a kinetic pattern that reflects the building’s midtown location. The tower’s sloped columns and street facade maximize the building’s floor area in accordance with the sky exposure plan while creating more engaging spaces within. A dynamic three-story-high entrance encompasses the hotel, a restaurant, and a vertical garden, enlivening the entry experience. Hotel guests and residents reach the elevator lobby across a dramatic bridge with views of the garden and lobby. The sophisticated residential interiors, crafted from luxurious materials, reinforce the modern vernacular of the building’s form.
