Driver License or State ID?

As I was doing my research on how to get an State ID I found out I was able to get a Driver’s License instead. Yes, a little bit more time and money, but it worked out perfectly well.

When arriving to the US I was told to try to get an State ID so I didn’t need to have my passport with me all the time and take the risk of losing it.

As I was doing my research on how to get an State ID I found out I was able to get a Driver’s License instead. Yes, a little bit more time and money, but it worked out perfectly well because my Argentine driver license is about to expire soon.

So, in order to get my NY Driver License, I needed to get a Learner Permit first. How? Easy, I just went to the closest DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) office, filled out a form that they gave me, paid for the permit (the amount also included the future license) and took a really easy written test. If you fail, you can take the test again at no additional cost. Fortunately I passed it the first time and a week later I had my Permit in my mailbox.

Now I have to take a quick 5 hour pre-licensing course (which fortunately are given on Saturdays as well) and schedule a road test. I haven’t had so much time to do it yet, but I’m planning to do that in the upcoming weeks. In the meanwhile I can use my permit as an ID and leave my passport in a safe place… It’s the last thing I would want to loose!
