Clayton Korte has completed an agricultural barn on California’s Central Coast, fully clad in Corten steel and designed to store machinery for a 60-hectare vineyard in Cayucos. Its simple gabled form sits between working Syrah vines and an oak woodland, creating a transition between the cultivated landscape and the surrounding natural environment.
Functionality drives the project: large sliding doors allow equipment to move easily through the building, while multiple access points open up to create covered outdoor working areas. Located on a rural off-grid site exposed to wildfire risk, the studio wrapped the timber structure in weathering steel, a material chosen to improve durability, reduce long-term maintenance and develop naturally over time.
