Blog 3.New Horizons: Navigating NYC Building Codes for Historic Districts

Well, this is my third blog, and I feel much more integrated into the design team. Lately, I’ve been diving into topics related to New York building codes and the specific requirements for designing and constructing in historic districts. It can be quite a challenge as you expand your vocabulary, translate metric measurements into fractional imperial ones, and navigate the differences between codes from your country and those of New York City. However, little by little, it all starts to make sense—it’s almost like learning another language, but definitely worth it!

I’m currently being trained in supporting the development of a drawing set for the Landmark Preservation Commission to obtain the necessary permits to kick off projects (commonly known as LPC) (It feels incredibly rewarding to finally become familiar with all the acronyms I’ve heard in this office).

I’m grateful for my advanced knowledeg in Revit, as it puts me in a position where I «simply» absorb all the inputs and information to eventually lead a project autonomously. The meetings with contractors, consultants, and specialists are dense and enlightening; they offer a wealth of interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Being part of this synergy is where I find myself learning the most, and I truly appreciate being involved.

So far, my experience has been immensely fulfilling. Certainly, in my home country, I wouldn’t have been able to dive into projects at such a profound level at such a young age, for various situational reasons. Nonetheless, I feel there’s still a vast world to explore and learn about, which deeply interests me.

It’s good to know that I have the support of everyone in the office; there’s an absence of hierarchy. We operate at a level where everyone shares their project challenges openly. Additionally, a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Pati Garcia, CEO of Architect-US, who kindly visited our office. Her presence made me realize how far I’ve come professionally. This opportunity is truly one in a million.

I’ll leave you with a header photo of mine with Manhattan in the background. I continue to be awestruck by its architectural beauty.
