Insights for Embracing the Northern Hemisphere’s Chilly Season

As the cool winds blow and the days grow shorter, winter approaches the northern hemisphere, transforming the architectural and natural landscape into something very picturesque. While it can be a departure from the usual coziness, with a little preparation and a touch of ingenuity, you too can take full advantage of this season. Here are a few tips I’ve put together to help you make the most of the winter ahead:

1. Layer up:

Just as a well-designed building has layers of insulation, invest in warm, insulating clothing, such as sweaters, coats, scarves and gloves. Thrift stores are a treasure trove of sustainable and affordable fashion, where you can discover unique pieces that add character to your winter closet. Consider stores like Uniqlo or the L train (on 3/4 Avenue), where a plethora of quality coats await your browsing. Layers not only keep you comfortable but also allow you to adjust your outfit according to the temperature throughout the day, much like the adaptive design of a building.

2. Prepare your home for winter:

Certain elements play a crucial role in combating the cold inside your home. Seal drafts, insulate windows and consider using thick curtains to retain heat. Just as a well-designed facade protects a building from the elements, make sure the exterior of your home is prepared for winter’s embrace. Stock up on cozy blankets and throws, transforming your living spaces into havens of comfort on those cold nights. Swap out your summer sheets for warmer fleece-lined sheets, wrapping yourself in cozy warmth. In addition, using a humidifier can help combat the dryness that accompanies the changing seasons, ensuring a harmonious balance within your sanctuary. Being prepared is key!

3. Enjoy a warm, comforting meal:

Treat yourself to hearty meals that warm both your body and soul. Embrace the flavors of winter with soups, stews and casseroles, savoring the symphony of flavors. Don’t forget to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or a steaming cup of tea, where the interplay of temperature and flavor creates a sensory delight that warms you from the inside out.

4. Explore indoor adventures:

Winter provides the perfect opportunity to delve into indoor activities. Whether it’s exploring the pages of books, painting your own creative visions or learning a new skill, find activities that bring you joy and keep your spirit engaged during the colder months. Let your creativity flow!

5. Stay active:

Spaces are designed to facilitate movement and activity, and winter shouldn’t get in the way of your exploration. Discover indoor workout options like yoga, dance classes or even in-home workouts, where the harmony of movement and space intertwine. Staying active not only keeps your body in shape, but also nourishes it and eliminates the winter blues with every stretch and jump.

Winter in the northern hemisphere can bring temperature changes, but with the right mindset and preparations, it can be a cozy and joyful season. Embrace the colder months, create experiences that ooze warmth and make the most of this unique time of year.
