The Subway’s Gambit

If you find yourself lost on the subway in New York, congratulations!

This is the first of many passages of wright passage for living this city. I have frequently found myself attempting to simultaneously squint at my phone screen and subway signs with solid focus and confusion drawn on my face.

In these situations it’s important to stay calm and take steps to redirect yourself. First thing to remember is that nothing can prepare you for the complex subway system here. Yes it’s true not even an architecture degree can save you from the abundant travelling routes of the New York  subway system.

Here are some tips in the case that you find yourself getting lost on the subway:

  1. Try to remember the name of the station you’re trying to reach and the line you’re on. Look for signs that indicate the direction of the train. All of the subway carts have a map inside telling you which direction you’re traveling in and which stops are coming up.
  2. if you miss your stop due to being inside of a crowded and/or loud subway cart, wait for the the next stop, you’ll be able to connect to the internet and use navigation apps like Google Maps or Citymapper to find your way. There is no cell service in-between stops but as soon as you can connect these apps can provide step-by-step directions and it even suggests alternative routes if there are any service disruptions.
  3. If all else fails, ask a fellow passenger for help. However, it’s important to exercise caution and only ask officials for directions. Or just use discernment however approaching the an MTA employee or a police officer is the best way forward because they are trained to assist and can provide accurate information.
  4. Finally, Remember, getting lost on the subway can be a stressful situation, but with a calm and level-headed approach, you can redirect yourself and find your way to your destination.
