It’s Felipe reporting from New York City again. This time I want to tell you about a plan I made last January in Broadway. It is an event that takes place almost every day and always in the same theater. Any idea?
No, it’s not a musical. So, then what?
Okay, I´ll give you one more clue, the event is experienced by people not only in the theater itself, neither just in the city.
As I used to do back in Spain, you can watch it, for example, on Youtube. But, after seeing it in my smartphone screen so many times… I had the opportunity to… be part of the audience of… The Late Show with Stephen Colbert!
I applied for a seat during my first week in the country. After you submit your application, there is a lottery and if you are lucky you get the seat. I was lucky twice. Not only because I got the seat, but also because it was for the filming of January the 6th, a traditional Christmas festivity in Spain. As this year I couldn’t celebrate it the normal way, it was fun to have this special and one-of-a-kind experience.
The shooting was very long: this day they filmed two different shows, the one for this same day and also the one for the day after. Despite the lenght it was really nice. Stephen is a master (or maybe even THE master, in my opinion tied with Conan) of talk shows, and he has a tremendous control of the stage. Besides the monologues and the hillarious and acidly critic videos the band was also unforgettable. They were playing live music, solo-ing sometimes and improvising between shot and shot (and all of that for free). Plus, the band was directed by the one and only Jon Batiste, so in the news some months after (see 2022 Grammys).
