LA Diaries: My first american Thanksgiving

If there is one holiday that defines the American experience more than any other, it is undoubtedly Thanksgiving. Growing up in Spain, we see this celebration in movies and TV shows, but living it in person is a completely different experience. It is a time for pause, reflection, and, quite honestly, an overwhelming amount of food.

The celebrations started early at Bell Design Group. We organized an office «Potluck» a few days before the actual holiday. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, a potluck is a gathering where each guest or employee contributes a different, often homemade, dish of food to be shared. It was such a fun way to bond with my colleagues outside of our usual project meetings and Archicad sessions. Because our office is multicultural, the spread was incredible—we had everything from traditional American casseroles to Mexican dishes. It was a culinary map of our team’s diversity, and it was the perfect warm-up for the main event.

Then came the big day: the fourth Thursday of November. Since my family is back in Spain, I celebrated a «Friendsgiving» with my group of friends here in the US. The concept of Friendsgiving is beautiful; it acknowledges that when you are far from home, your friends become your chosen family.

We went all out with the traditions. I finally got to see a massive roasted turkey being carved in real life! We started with a charcuterie board and had all the classic sides: stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, and, of course, pumpkin pie. I was completely stuffed—I think I finally understand what Americans call the «food coma.»

Beyond the food, what really struck me was the spirit of the day. We went around the table and shared what we were thankful for. It might sound cheesy, but it was a genuinely moving moment. I shared how grateful I am for this adventure, and for finding a community of friends who make Los Angeles feel like home. It was a day I will never forget.
