Hello everybody! Welcome to this fourth blog. This month I would like to talk about something that we all have in common here: architecture. What is it like to live in Los Angeles as an architect? Is it possible to make architectural routes around the city? Here I tell you my experience.
Los Angeles, like most American cities, is not defined by having a long history. For a Spanish architect like me, this is a bit strange. Think about it, in the city where I was born there are old buildings of more than 1500 years! It’s definitely a big cultural change if you compare it to LA.
However, this Californian city has one of the best architectural examples of recent centuries. Starting with the great influence of the Case Study House, as well as the Eames house (which can be visited).
In addition to this, in the American culture it is very common that, in architecture studios, «field trips» are organized from time to time in order to have references and learn more about the style of the city.
The other day, I had my first field trip and it was a great experience. The main idea was to better understand the figure of Frank Gehry and how his architecture contributed to this city. First, we went to Loyola Law School, an icon of the postmodern movement. Later, we enter to the Downtown to visit the Walt Disney Concert Hall and see his most modern project in front of him. The funniest thing was the debate between my coworkers because, well, let’s just say that not everyone likes Frank Gehry!
Undoubtedly a very positive trip to better understand the architecture of this great city. See you next month in a new blog!
