Running in the U.S.A

I ran a lot in Scotland before moving here but it has been a bit of a shock getting used to Americas extreme weather- the summer was so hot and humid and the winter SO COLD!

Hi everyone!

I recently completed my second half marathon since moving here so thought I would write this blog post about running. I really enjoy running outdoors as it is a great way to explore new places, take in fresh air, meet new people, and of course keep in shape.

My apartment is around a quarter mile run to the waterfront where there are the most amazing views of the New York skyline and a path that goes for miles in both directions, definitely making it my favorite place to run. I always wonder if the views will ever get old!

For both of the half marathons I signed up for my training plans were similar. I would do 3 or 4 short runs around Hoboken and on the weekend I go for a longer run which tied in nicely if I was visiting somewhere new. I ran a lot in Scotland before moving here but it has been a bit of a shock getting used to Americas extreme weather- the summer was so hot and humid and the winter SO COLD! Here’s how the races went:

Race day 1: The Newport Liberty Half Marathon (September)

Where: Jersey City, Liberty State Park

The route: The route hugged the waterfront for a while before passing through downtown Jersey City, however the majority of it was in Liberty State Park which I had never been to before and was really beautiful.

The weather: The sun was out in full force however as I am learning here- so was the humidity!

My time: I finished in 2hrs 18 mins which I was a little disappointed with as I typically run faster, however I put it down to the heat and it gave me a good incentive to sign up for another!

The highlight: For me the highlight of this race was the amazing views of the Statue of Liberty and Downtown Manhattan.

Race day 2: The Big Apple Half Marathon (December)

Where: Central Park

The route: 2 and a half loops of Central Park (with a number of killer hills!!)

The weather: It snowed a lot the day before but luckily the race still went ahead. It was a very cold wait at the start line as they make you check your jackets over an hour before! Wasn’t too cold once I got moving.

My time: I finished in 2hrs 9 mins which I was really delighted with. My goal for a long time as been to finish a half with an average of 10 minute miles, so I finally achieved it! It was surprising considering the hills!

The highlight: As it had snowed the day before, the whole of Central Park was like a perfect wintery postcard!
