EDUARDO BLANES

Meet Eduardo and his new life in New York, a city he never expected to be so wonderful!

The moment I decided becoming an architect was…

The origin of my relationship with architecture arises from my childhood. At that moment, my life was between my grandparents’ house and my father’s study. Quite possibly, from this important relationship arises my passion for architecture that has allowed me to discover many cities and cultures such as Rome, London or Madrid. Therefore, the moment in which I decided to become an architect was in that childhood in which the learning of the drawing monopolizes every moment of my growth.

I always dreamed of working in the USA…

In my personal case, having had the opportunity to work and study in major European cities such as Rome, London and Madrid, the opportunity to work in New York meant closing a circle where my learning has been directly related to the cities in which I have worked up.

What I love from my current job at S9 Architecture is…

Without a doubt, the first thing that has caught my attention in this first month of collaboration has been the business structure that I have never had the opportunity to know. In my case, all my experience has been developed in small offices, becoming this opportunity in the first to know this kind of office structure. Therefore, if I had to emphasize what really surprised me would be the structure of the office.

By contrast, what it took me more to get used to was…

…the standardization of the project processes themselves. For this reason, the research capacity is more limited by the business structure itself.

If I have to define the Architect-US experience, it would be…

My relationship with Architect-US has been very satisfactory from the outset. The company has helped me to complete the whole process from the moment it was started, solving any doubts that might arise. Their availability has always been absolute and would certainly recommend them for any young architect who had the dream of working in the United States.

What I’d like to know before coming to the U.S. is…

From the professional point of view, I believe that non-American architects are absolutely capable of responding to the expectations of an American office. Therefore, I do not consider that there is any factor or knowledge that should be acquired prior to the experience. Cultural deficiencies themselves help to make the American experience more exciting.

In New York , you cannot miss…

…a walk on Bleecker Street from east to west. In this first month, that street has allowed me to know in depth the reality of New York. From my point of view, it is the itinerary where the different layers of the city are recognized. So I absolutely suggest a walk through my favourite street.

What I’ll always miss doing…

…of my life in Madrid is to establish friendships easily. In New York, I am living that circumstance. With my American colleagues in the office, the relationship is fantastic but I think it will be difficult to deepen and create a more profound and lasting relationship.

I never expected…

…the city of New York to be so wonderful. I always had the image of an aggressive and complicated city. From my personal experience, the biggest surprise has come from my adaptation to New York City.

If I only could choose a moment of Architect-US experience, it would be…

…undoubtedly, the moment I received the passport with my visa. Perhaps it was the moment when the work of eight intense weeks makes the most sense. Therefore, the arrival of the passport with the visa represented the culmination of one stage and the opening of another.

The plan I don’t get tired of doing is…

…having a cocktail overlooking the Manhattan skyline after a hard day’s work. In that sense, the city offers numerous rooftops from which to establish a closed relationship with the immensity of the city of New York.
