June the month of love

Pride month celebrations in NYC got very serious this year. The city was shining in all colors, and there were many events and parades to show solidarity with lgbtq+ communities. One of my favorite pride decorations was the storefront of Macy’s Department Store. A huge facade of the building was covered with small shiny colorful squares, millions of them. I even saw people picking up a piece of decoration and keeping it as a souvenir.

The pride decorations are on building exteriors, but also in the interiors. Almost every restaurant, coffee shop, and bar has an interior detail accenting the pride month, for example, a flag. The pride flag is the most popular way to decorate the streets and public spaces. Most of the institutional buildings, such as city halls, schools, and churches, have a flag.

The biggest event of the month is the Pride parade. This year’s parade took place on Sunday, June 26th in Manhattan. The parade starts in midtown 5th avenue and the crowds go downtown to the West Village area. Where the route of the parade was, all streets were closed for cars. Downtown Manhattan was one big public space, and you could only walk around on foot. Taxi, subway, and even bikes were impossible ways of transportation. I have never seen New York like this. The streets were for people to enjoy pride month and celebrate love. In spite of the fact that it was the hottest day this year so far and the temperature hit 88 degrees.

June is truly the month of love. Pride month takes place in many countries around the world, but I think nothing beats celebrations in NYC! Happy pride all year long!
