ALEJANDRO ARAVENA’S LECTURE AT COOPER UNION

Alejandro Aravena talks about his concerns towards the present-day architecture through explaining one of his most renowned buildings: the UC Innovation Center, Chile… while drawing live!!

On September 22 I attended this lecture at The Great Hall of The Cooper Union University, between third and fourth avenues. It was crowded (I couldn’t even take a seat!) but I enjoyed it a lot specially because of the lecture’s format. Halfway between an interview and a proper conference, Alejandro’s drawings were displayed live while speaking so I was able to understand quite deeper what he was trying to explain. Never saw this before! I found this very interesting and kept my attention throughout the whole event. Though the questions he was asked were focused on general aspects of architecture (such as ethics or design processes), he articulated every answer through the logic of a specific building: the UC Innovation Center in Chile. I liked this particular fact because it gave consistency to his work; I mean, “no matter what question arises, if it has to do with architecture, my answer will be in my work”.

This event was co-sponsored by The Architectural League of New York, who has been promoting a bunch of lectures since who knows when. Tadao Ando, David Chipperfield, Steven Holl… keep an eye on their website to know the upcoming events and make the most of your training program! This city is simply vibrant!
