NOGUCHI’S SECRET GARDEN

Visiting the Noguchi Museum in Astoria turned out to be the perfect plan for a Saturday. This peaceful museum is located in Astoria, which is a Greek neighborhood within Queens that hosts one of the greater Greek communities in the USA.

The perfect plan is going in the early afternoon to first have an authentic Greek meal after a nice stroll in the neighborhood and afterwards visiting the Noguchi Museum. The museum is placed in an industrial area and it’s amazing how its bare walls and austere materials contain such an amazing space. It feels like there is a virtual boundary that set you totally apart from the rest of the neighborhood once you get within its walls. It’s noticeable by the aesthetics of the building that there’s a japanese taste behind the design: simple, clean but overwhelming by the game of lights and shadows which provides it a peaceful atmosphere. The building was designed as an open-air sculpture garden that smoothly gets within the interior space. Thus, beyond the architectural design, the brutalist sculptures designed by the architect are the art pieces in display. You will find the full Noguchi art collection in the museum, understanding his evolution from pure shapes to the imperfection of nature. Despite the simplicity of its shapes every sculpture seems to be meaningful and powerful and especially the way they are scattered in the outdoor space takes you somewhere else but New York.

I would strongly recommend this visit to everyone in NYC. Its Japanese garden is especially worth it
