Faulkner Architects has clad the Pine Flat Residence in corrugated Corten steel to enhance its resistance to wildfires in Northern California. The two-story, three-bedroom home is situated on a steep slope in Healdsburg, on the very site where a self-sufficient home was destroyed during the 2019 Kincade Fire. The commission called for durable, low-maintenance architecture capable of blending into the historic character of the Pine Flat community.
The project reuses the existing concrete foundations and walls to conserve embodied energy and minimize site disturbance. The house is designed as an elongated volume with a gabled roof, aligned with the crest of the landscape, while the garage projects at an angle from the main structure and sits atop a workshop integrated into the lower slope, reinforcing its topographical adaptation and its commitment to permanence.
