SOM’s Stepped Skyscraper Tops Out Along Lake Michigan in Chicago

SOM’s North Tower has reached its maximum height overlooking Lake Michigan in Chicago. Rising 261 metres, the skyscraper combines a stepped silhouette, terraces, a glazed façade and a 25-metre crown that strengthens its presence on the city skyline.

Scheduled for completion in 2027, it will be the first of two residential towers within the 400 Lake Shore Drive development. Its design reinterprets Chicago’s traditional bay windows, while the mechanical systems are concealed within the structure to preserve a clean and uninterrupted exterior.
