Miller Hull brings light and brutalist character back to a university library in California.

Kennedy Library at Cal Poly SLO is once again filled with light, openness and brutalist character. The renovation led by Miller Hull Partnership restores the essence of Robert Marquis’s original 1977 design, bringing renewed focus to the central courtyard, open sightlines and exterior concrete fins that shade the building from the California sun.

The project transforms a heavy, fragmented structure into a clearer, more collaborative space connected to the university’s “learn by doing” philosophy. By removing visual barriers and reopening the relationship between interior and exterior, the library becomes more than a place for study: it becomes a true hub for gathering, orientation and shared learning.
