Manhattan is redefining its skyline with the new supertall building next to Grand Central

The developers of 175 Park Avenue in New York have filed permits for the supertall skyscraper proposed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Midtown Manhattan, a project that, if completed, would become the third-tallest building in the city. The initiative, led by RXR Realty and TF Cornerstone, is back in the spotlight following its initial announcement in 2019 and proposes replacing the current Hyatt hotel next to Grand Central Terminal, taking advantage of zoning changes that allow for the reuse of air rights over the railway infrastructure.

Across from this new development stands the One Vanderbilt skyscraper, designed by KPF, cementing the area as one of the most ambitious hubs of the New York skyline. The SOM project, presented in 2021 and already preliminarily approved, calls for a height of 1,545 feet and 83 floors dedicated to hotel and office space. The complexity of the site, with extreme limitations on the foundation, has led to the integration of an exterior steel lattice structural system that concentrates the supports at specific points at the base, thereby resolving one of the development’s greatest technical challenges.
