The Byben studio has designed an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in Southern California called Offset ADU, characterized by its ipe wood cladding and a design that incorporates curved elements to soften the perception of volume. The project is located in the backyard of a family home in Los Angeles, specifically in the Mar Vista neighborhood, and addresses the need of a couple with two children to expand their living space without sacrificing flexibility of use. The new structure replaces an old garage that served as both storage and an office, and was designed after evaluating the possibility of a direct addition versus a standalone unit.
