Range Design & Architecture has transformed a narrow plot of land in Chicago into the headquarters of Nothing Design Co., combining a workshop, showroom, and event space. The intervention expands an existing structure to 325 square meters, enveloping it in a brick skin that connects with the city’s building tradition and filters natural light.
The façade, made of new and reclaimed bricks, fills an urban void and adapts the scale of the building to that of the human body. Taking advantage of the original load-bearing walls, the team managed to add two more levels, although the proximity to the boundaries of the site prevented the opening of side openings, so light enters only from the north and south ends.
