Scalloped concrete panels and stretches of glass define the aesthetics of the new Wayne County Criminal Justice Center, a project by the firm HOK that seeks to convey dignity, transparency and efficiency. Located in Detroit, the complex occupies nearly 11 acres and houses an adult jail, a juvenile detention center and a courthouse with 29 courtrooms.
Comprehensive planning for the campus, which also includes a utility plant and offices for the sheriff and prosecutor, was handled by HOK. With 1.1 million square feet of floor space, the design is functional without sacrificing visual openness, in an attempt to humanize the jail and court environment in Michigan’s most populous county.
