Over the past month at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, I have focused on supporting the design and sustainability efforts for two distinct building projects. My primary responsibility has been to help integrate sustainable design principles, particularly related to the facades and energy performance of the buildings. I’ve collaborated closely with a diverse team, including facade engineers, energy modelers, and architects, to ensure that the buildings are energy-efficient, environmentally responsible, and functional.
A major highlight of my month was attending the Chicago Innovate Conference and Hackathon. This event, which focused on the intersection of architecture and technology, provided a unique opportunity to engage with professionals from across the industry. I had the chance to hear from renowned architects, including those from Zaha Hadid Architects and Foster + Partners, who shared their expertise on the latest advancements in AI, cutting-edge fabrication techniques, and the evolving role of technology in architecture. The conference broadened my perspective on how these innovations are reshaping the design and construction of the built environment.
In addition to the conference, I participated in a weekend hackathon with a multidisciplinary team of seven designers, architects, and software engineers. Together, we developed a scripted facade system that uses fabric shaders to provide passive solar shading. The system automatically adjusts the angle of the fabric based on the sun’s position, helping to prevent overheating and reduce the building’s energy consumption. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply my skills in a collaborative setting, where we combined our knowledge of design, engineering, and software to address a real-world challenge.
Overall, this has been an enriching month that has deepened my understanding of sustainable design and exposed me to innovative technologies shaping the future of architecture. I’m excited to continue contributing to these projects and look forward to further learning opportunities at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill.
