My name is Andrés Melo, and I am a 26-year-old architect from Bogotá, Colombia. After earning my architecture degree and gaining nearly three years of professional experience in my home country, I decided to pursue a master’s degree in Europe. This academic journey broadened my understanding of the architectural field and sparked my curiosity about living and working abroad. During this time, I was introduced to Architect-US through a series of talks and interviews focused on professional development. The J1 exchange visa process stood out as a unique opportunity to continue my growth as an architect after my studies, especially since the US was often mentioned as a hub of high-quality professional environments.
Upon returning to Colombia, I reached out to Architect-US to explore the J1 program further. I soon realized it was the perfect next step for my career. Initially, I had some concerns regarding how long it would take to receive offers, get interviews, and what type of firms I might be considered for. I also wondered what US firms would expect from me as a candidate. However, the guidance I received throughout the process eased all my worries. The Architect-US advisor provided invaluable advice at every step, from preparing for interviews to understanding the expectations of US firms.
After securing an offer from a firm that aligns perfectly with my interests, the visa application process began. Thankfully, the instructions were clear and efficient, and I was able to obtain an embassy appointment and get my visa approved faster than expected. Now, I am eagerly preparing to start this exciting new chapter.
I look forward to learning how architectural projects are developed in the US. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a firm closely related to my professional passions, located near New York City. This experience promises to be both a valuable professional and personal journey, and I can’t wait to begin.
