Abandoned Detroit bakery converted into an art space

An early 20th-century bakery and warehouse have been converted into a 2,072-square-meter space into an arts center with 1,000 windows as part of the Little Village development.

The project, developed by Dutch studio OMA and called Lantern, is a building for two nonprofit arts organizations with retail and studio spaces, as well as a large courtyard. The project combines three buildings constructed between the 1920s and 1960s, with brick used for the older buildings and a Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) wall for the newer ones. Each of the structures was interspersed in a line with the north building rising to two stories, while the others were single story.
