Exploring the outskirts of New York City

Exploring the landscapes around NYC

The past week has been all about exploring the last of the autumn landscapes surrounding the city. Although with the temperatures up in the 20ies (degrees) it has felt more like late summer rather than fall to be honest. It’s been a week of reflection on how I love the city but am equally happy spending time out in nature and also how that is a possibility in New York.

The weekend was spent in Upstate NY, enjoying some long hiking trails with beautiful views and and outdoors bbq for dinner. Very calm and relaxing. A stop on the way back to the city took us over the border to Connecticut to visit Grace Farms – a lovely project by SAANA, set in the beautiful landscape.

I have to admit this might be one of my favorite projects of theirs, and I have seen a fair share. The use of materials, the details and how the building integrates into the landscape is all very thought through. It is also interesting as the whole project is about sustainability and they offer free lectures during the day to discuss these topics. It was a great stop which made me think a lot about architecture, nature and its relationship to one another. I think when nature is enhanced by the built environment it is a most successful project which inn my opinion Grace Farms manages to do.

Continuing on the topic of nature and architecture I also had the opportunity to visit Pennsylvania this week as work brought me out to the most beautiful location for a site visit regarding an upcoming project. I really enjoy how work can be combined with the exploration of my surroundings.

All in all the past week has been truly rejuvenating and I can’t wait to explore more around the city as the seasons pass. Next up is winter – I can’t wait to take out the skates and skis.
