Try to accept as many friend requests as possible.  Focus on posting content that portrays you in a way that is considerate and feeds into the reputation you are seeking to promote in the industry. You are a professional, so you are trying to showcase this side of you.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are their biggest challenges as a start-up/legacy company/mid- sized? 
  • How do they market themselves? 
  • What types of topics do they comment on normally? 
  • What do they retweet or share?

All of these questions will give you an idea of the content and strategy that makes the most sense for the specific companies and decisionmakers you are looking to target. Once you have an idea of who, where, and how you want to target your content towards then you need to figure out what kind of content makes the most sense. This content can range from new product releases to news regarding the firm’s new projects to even just a fun challenge they are doing.

Also think about how your voice can impact others, so for example, consider writing on relevant and hot topics in the industry. You can also create your own personal blog, but this requires more work as you must post often.
