Ukrainian Village

Hello Architect-US crew, welcome to my blog!

There is nothing better than visiting a neighborhood of Chicago with a local and being able to walk around Ukrainian Village and discover some hidden spots was great!

COFFEE IN UKRAINIAN VILLAGE

If you are totally hooked on coffee, like me, I am sure Dark Matter Coffee will win your heart. It is located at 738 N Western Avenue, strategically close to a bus stop. Even if the place only has outside seating (everyone who has been to Chicago during the winter season knows how seating outside at this time of the year can be quite a challenging ), it is a must. I dare say they have the best oat latte I have ever had since I arrived in the US!

ART EXHIBIT AT THE UKRAINIAN INSTITUTE OF MODERN ART

One of the biggest surprises in the neighborhood was finding this gem. Located on Chicago Avenue, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art proved to be one of my favorite galleries in Chicago! They currently have 2 ongoing exhibitions of different Ukrainian artists. One of those was exclusive of women artists living here in the windy city, trying to give them a voice and make them known to a bigger audience. All the displayed art pieces were striking and so thoughtful! If you ever find yourself walking around the area, please give it a chance! You won’t be disappointed!

GROCERY SHOPPING

I think one of the things that shocked me the most when I first came here was the sizes of the supermarkets. So many options and quantities of food! It almost felt a bit overwhelming! This scale of grocery stores has become more normal to me, but I still miss dearly the smaller and cozier size of shops back in Spain. My friend insisted that Ann’s Bakery and Deli, located on Chicago Avenue, would be an absolute treat. If you miss European bread this is the place to go!
