Storm King, museum between leaves

I’ve told you about DIA Beacon before, a less known museum about an hour and a half away from New York City. Today I’ll tell you about Storm King.

Storm King is a museum, or maybe a park, about the same distance from New York City as Beacon, but harder to get by train, so if you can get a car that will be the best option. Late October is a special time in the New York area as the leaves of the trees start to get crazy colors. So it is a perfect time to visit Storm King because it’s an open air huuuuuge museum with large sculptures scattered around. It’s a work of landscape, there are meadows, grass dunes, forests, hills, lawns, paths and a building holding some exhibitions with smaller but really interesting pieces.

The sculptures outside are fantastic, with artists such as Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois and Calder having pieces exhibited. Most of them are a few meters tall and have some structural aspect to them, as many are made of steel with beams, profiles and bolts holding them together, and they sit beautifully in the landscape.
It takes around 3 hours to walk around most of it, although it can definitely be a whole day activity. There are, if you’re not up for the walk, bikes for rental, trams, and boogies running through the site. People bring sandwiches for lunch, and even take naps lying down on one of the lawn slopes, which I must admit, was a bit jealous of.

After, a beautiful way back home with the sunset next to the Hudson River, probably with a bit of traffic as everyone rushes back to the city.

Definitely one of the best visits outside the city and a perfect timing for the fall season!
