Despite all the fantastic things that the big apple has to offer sometimes the city can become overwhelming and make one feel restless. Fortunately, it is easy to find good alternatives to escape NYC for an always short weekend.
If you have only a short weekend I will recommend exploring the city surroundings. Hudson Valley is a great option and you can get there easily in a short ride train. But If you want to walk on the sand and swim in the ocean weather permitting Long Island should be your pick. This island comprises the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens what means that the majority of New York City residents live on Long Island. However, everyone use “Long Island” to refer exclusively to Nassau and Suffolk counties, which have a very different character. Here you can find different and interesting places to visit as:
Parrish Art Museum, Water Mills / Designed with great respect for the landscape by Herzog & de Meuron. From its permanent collection, I could visit an exhibition dedicated to James Brooks and Alan Shields available until October. Also and until June you could visit the exhibition “Image Building” which explores the intersection of Photography and Architecture.
Montauk / The farthest point of Long Island’s South Fork. It is technically part of the Hamptons it’s a whole different world. Less dense and more natural. Perfect to escape the craziness of NYC.
