After the big David Hockney exhibition at the Met (which I missed), I was happy to see his latest works at Pace Gallery. A walk around a couple of blocks in Chelsea can get you to see at least 2 or 3 great exhibitions in galleries, and another handful of good ones if you have the time.
Hockney’s new works have an amazing variation in the shape of their frames, which adds a strange and fascinating layer to their depictions of California landscapes. In the back of the gallery, a big wall-size painting, a mix of photoshop image and oil painting, shows him in his studio with the paintings shown in the exhibition. A twist adding another layer of intelligence to what at first sight seem naive works.
