The monumental structure floating on the Hudson River in the picture is the Riverbank State Park, a park built in the nineties on top of a sewage treatment plant west of Harlem.
Behind the imposing arches, a large chunk of the wastewater produced in Manhattan is treated. The smell reaches the whole area around it. On top, a beautiful park stand, giving some of the best views of the northern part of Manhattan. Apparently the project was Philip Johnson‘s idea. Ahead of its time, for sure.
