VELENKA HERBEZ

Meet Velenka, from Montenegro, and everything she learns about wood construction!

The moment I decided becoming an architect was…

…when I was 18 years old and visited Greece. Architecture that I saw there motivated me to become an architect.

I always dreamed of working in the USA…

…because I wanted to learn about American architecture, about wood construction, to see famouse buildings and to improve my English.

What I love from my current job at Nantucket Architects is…

…the opportunity to be part of creative group of architects making interesting projects, to draw in computer program and to visit construction places.

By contrast, what it took me more to get used to was…

…American metric system.

If I have to define the Architect-US experience, it would be…

…I needed to have a lot of patience while I was waiting for documents. We were waiting for the Site Visit because company is situated on the island and it was not easy to find representative to go there. Patricia had a lot of patience explaining me all steps of the process and always answered fast.

What I’d like to know before coming to the U.S. is…

…that moving from island to mainland is not always easy because it depends on weather condition. Other things are good, I got used fast.

In Nantucket , you cannot miss…

…visiting Whaling Museum, Basket Museum, Dreamland Theatre, The Oldest House, Lighthouses.

What I’ll always miss doing…

…is Site Visits with my boss.

I never expected…

…to learn so much about wood construction and to use American metric system.

If I only could choose a moment of Architect-US experience, it would be…

…when I got envelop with DS and documents, when I got visa and first working day on the island.

The plan I don’t get tired of doing is…

…drawing in computer program and visiting construction places.
