SHoP Architects reinterprets Detroit’s history with the Hudson complex

The US firm SHoP Architects has completed the office section of the Hudson’s complex in downtown Detroit, a project designed to pay tribute to the historic JL Hudson department store building. The complex includes a 12-story office building that has already been completed and a 45-story tower that, although still under construction, is already shaping up to be a new urban icon with its clad facade and crowned structure.

The tower, which will be the second tallest in Detroit when it opens in 2027, symbolizes the city’s resurgence after its bankruptcy in 2013. The complex, developed by Bedrock, occupies the site of the legendary Hudson’s department store, which was demolished in the late 1990s. For years, the site remained vacant, and now it is coming back to life as a tangible symbol of urban renewal and progress.
