Hello everyone! My name is Laura Manglano, and I am very excited to share the beginning of my journey to the U.S. as I prepare to join Fogarty Finger in Boston. This opportunity feels like the perfect next step after years of study, internships, and international experiences.
I studied architecture at ETSAV (UPC), where I graduated near the top of my class, and later completed a Master’s at ETSAM (UPM) with honors. In addition, I spent a semester at EPFL Lausanne, which gave me valuable international exposure and encouraged me to see design from new perspectives. Along the way, I worked at several offices in Spain and Switzerland, from Pulso Studio in Madrid to Mango’s R+D+i Department in Barcelona and Wolff Obrist in Lausanne. These experiences helped me grow professionally while exposing me to projects as varied as cultural institutions, retail concepts, and large-scale housing. Moreover, I was fortunate to receive recognition in competitions such as the Knauf Prize (2022) and Repensando aulas (2020), which motivated me to keep aiming higher.
At first, I thought the visa process would take months and would be complicated to manage. However, things moved much faster than expected. I received my job offer on August 28th, and by October 2nd I already had my embassy appointment scheduled.
When the day finally arrived, the experience went much better than I expected. The appointment was smooth, fast, and very efficient. I had prepared all my documents in advance, so everything was in order. As a result, the process felt straightforward, and I left the embassy with a great sense of relief. Therefore, my biggest piece of advice for future participants would be: prepare carefully, stay calm, and trust that the process is simpler than it looks once you are ready.
I first heard about Architect-US through Arquia, and then decided to continue the process independently. Their guidance was clear and structured, which made a big difference. In fact, just knowing that I was not alone during this journey reduced much of the stress.
I secured my current role through Archinect, and I feel very grateful to have been selected by Fogarty Finger. Their work inspires me because of the way they combine creativity with functionality, and I am eager to contribute to their projects. In addition, I expect to learn a great deal from their talented team and from the fast-paced environment of the U.S.
Looking ahead, I believe this experience will be transformative. On the one hand, it will allow me to grow professionally by learning how architecture is practiced in the U.S. On the other hand, it will give me the chance to immerse myself in a new culture, discover Boston’s rich architectural history, and meet inspiring people along the way.
So far, the Architect-US program has exceeded my expectations. It simplified what could have been a very stressful process. I would strongly recommend this program to anyone who dreams of gaining international experience. As I prepare for this new chapter, I feel excited and grateful. This journey represents both professional and personal growth, and I hope my story encourages other young architects to take the leap and pursue their dreams abroad.
Boston and Fogarty Finger, here I come!
