New arts center in Colorado by KVA

The US firm Kennedy & Violich Architecture has transformed a former domed ice skating rink from the 1960s into a modern educational building in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The renovated Honnen Arts Hub at Colorado College, completed in 2024, retains the iconic seven barrel vault structure of the original 1961 pavilion, now integrating spacious art studios, workshops, and galleries into its 300 square meters.

The renovation restored the architectural essence of the site by demolishing the walls added in the 1980s, opening up the vault bases with thin-profile glass, and giving the new recessed entrance a terracotta tone inspired by the red sandstone of the surrounding landscape. The result is a space that dialogues between past and present, maintaining the identity of the iconic structure while embracing a new creative purpose.
