Hi everyone!
I’m Mariana, an architecture intern currently working with Mark Poe Builders in Nashville, Tennessee. I’m excited to share an update about my second month in this internship program and reflect on what I’ve learned so far during this incredible summer abroad.
These past few weeks, I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of how a general contractor operates — not just in terms of construction, but in managing relationships and communication with architects, interior designers, suppliers, and clients. One of the most rewarding aspects has been seeing how essential ongoing coordination is to keep several projects on track at once.
I’ve contributed to site visits and supervision, helped with material research, and supported scheduling and documentation. I’ve also taken site photos, prepared presentations, and joined key meetings with collaborators. These experiences have shown me the importance of being detail-oriented, responsive, and collaborative in every stage of a project. They’ve also helped me realize how much I enjoy the dynamic and interdisciplinary nature of this role.
Another highlight has been learning about the work of new architecture and interior design studios — not only in Nashville but also in other major cities across the U.S. As an intern and a postgraduate student focused on housing design, it’s been incredibly inspiring to get hands-on experience with high-end residential projects. I know this exposure will be a valuable foundation for my future professional path, both in Mexico and wherever my career takes me.
Outside the office, I’ve been exploring Nashville’s neighborhoods, trying amazing food, and enjoying the city’s unique energy — a blend of tradition, creativity, and design innovation. I even got to celebrate the 4th of July on a weekend trip to Austin and experience fireworks and classic American barbecue for the first time, which made me feel more connected to the culture around me.
I’m truly grateful for this opportunity to grow professionally and personally. I’d encourage anyone considering a program like this to go for it — it’s a life-changing experience that broadens your perspective in every way. I’m looking forward to what the next month will bring!
