The City of Chicago and the Department of Aviation have begun construction on Concourse D at O’Hare International Airport, a project designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in collaboration with Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects, and Arup. This is the first building in ORDNext, the most ambitious expansion in the airport’s history, which will be completed by the end of 2028 under the direction of AECOM Hunt Clayco Bowa. At the same time, planning is also underway for Concourse E, designed by the same design team.
The new Concourse D, with a budget of $1.3 billion, seeks to completely transform the passenger experience from arrival to boarding gate. It will be one of the first concourses in the United States designed for domestic and international codeshare flights, optimizing connectivity and operations. In addition, it integrates sustainable solutions, such as an efficient structural system that reduces the carbon footprint and a design that takes advantage of natural light and regulates temperature based on the local climate.
