Sotheby’s has commissioned Herzog & de Meuron to renovate the iconic Breuer Building on Madison Avenue, an icon of New York modernism. The project will transform the former museum into a contemporary headquarters for the auction house, with new showrooms, restoration and a modernized sales room. The reopening is scheduled for fall 2025.
This change marks a historic turning point: for the first time, the building will not be occupied by a museum institution. While its use is being redefined, organizations such as Docomomo US have called for its protection as an interior monument, underscoring the cultural relevance of its original public spaces.
