Month 6 – Chicago Jake Levy

Hi Everyone,

As I wrap up my sixth month working abroad at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, I’m reflecting on a period filled with both professional growth and personal discovery. My time here has been transformative, with enriching experiences that have advanced my skills in architectural design and technology.

Immersing myself in Rhino has been a significant part of my journey. I’ve had the privilege of working on a garden pavilion project, utilizing software like Enscape and D5 to bring intricate designs to life. This hands-on experience has sharpened my abilities in creating architectural elements, interiors, and facades while focusing on sustainability and innovative parametric patterns—key aspects of cutting-edge architectural design.

The firm’s dedication to innovation extends beyond project work, with regular “lunch and learn” sessions providing invaluable exposure to the latest products and technologies shaping the industry. These sessions have been eye-opening, highlighting advancements in sustainability and efficiency while reinforcing Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture’s leadership in sustainable design practices and innovative material use.

Outside of work, my weekends have been filled with opportunities to unwind and explore Chicago’s vibrant culture. Hosting visiting friends has allowed me to experience the city’s energy and iconic attractions. A highlight was attending my first NFL game at Soldier Field, where the Chicago Bears faced off against the Minnesota Vikings. The close game, roaring fans, and electrifying atmosphere made it unforgettable. From pre-game festivities to taking in stunning skyline views, it was a quintessential Chicago moment that deepened my connection to the city.

This past month has been an incredible blend of learning, exploration, and connection. Working on meaningful projects, engaging with industry innovations, and immersing myself in Chicago’s rich culture has made my time here both inspiring and rewarding. I look forward to another 6 months at ASGG, I have been so lucky to work at this amazing firm.
